For those of you who have flexible schedules, enjoy a certain level of unpredictability and want to save a mountain of cash, then learning how to find last minute cruise deals may be for you. Now, many of you who follow my articles on various travel web sites know that I do not advocate taking last minute cruises because my schedule is not flexible because of obligations to my publisher and other contractual issues. However, they are still a fantastic way to make some excellent deals on any of the major cruise lines. The cruises lines prefer that passengers book far in advance and there are benefits to doing so but they are prepared to make some amazing discounts when the departure date draws near. Always keep in mind that cruise line operators must book every itinerary to capacity in order to maximize its revenue. Some may say, "No kidding", but this business model is a bit different that standard business. Managers of cruise lines know that people tend to spend more money while at sea than on a regular vacation. Passengers expect to pay more for alcohol and they do not doing so. They also tend to consume more alcohol than they normally do. That is very high margin sales and the cruise lines are happy to oblige. Other ways that they make up for heavily discounted last minute cruise deals are through sales at duty free shops, gift shops, on-board casinos and educational activities.
What should you consider if you are going to shop for last minute cruises? Here are some pros and cons to help you decide if they are right for you:
Pros
The savings are substantial. It is not unheard of to find deals at nearly ninety percent off standard cruise rates. This is the closest thing to all inclusive cruises available anywhere. You may not have to pay for anything else other than incidentals and tips.
Potential double upgrades. Studies show that people in upgraded cabins and staterooms tend to spend more on meals, drinks and room service.
Added incentives with complimentary amenities. When dealing directly with cruise lines reservation professionals, they are authorized to offer addition on-board credits and complimentary services.
Cons:
Unpredictable departure dates. Just by the nature of making last minute reservations, you may only have a few day's notice of departure. Some people, like me, cannot accept such uncertainty
Coordination with airline flights and hotels are a hassle. Unless you book a package deal with the cruises lines, you may have difficulty finding flights and costs may be higher.
Limited selection of preferred staterooms and cabins. Most of the best cabins and staterooms were reserved long ago. Take extra care to go the cruise line web site and discuss the deck place and cabin location before you commit.
